Fire detection for cable trays and switchgear with self-powered fire detection sensors (Innoplatec)

Fire detection for cable trays and switchgear with self-powered fire detection sensors (Innoplatec)

Site: Cable tray manufacturing plant (Innoplatec)

Self-powered fire detection sensors were mounted directly on cable trays and on the busbars of the switchgear in a building, so overheating is detected before a fire starts.

1. Purpose

  • A power-free fire detection system using self-powered sensors.
  • The cable tray manufacturer and the switchgear in the building lacked an adequate disaster prevention system.
  • A disaster and fire response measure was needed for the workplace.
  • A fire management system was needed for the switchgear rooms, including the cable trays in use in the plant.
  • Adding signal repeaters extends the transmission range of the self-powered sensors.

2. Benefits

  • Prevents fires and explosions caused by cable heating: heat is detected earlier than smoke, allowing early response.
  • Prevents sudden outages and line stoppages and supports planned maintenance.
  • Cable trays have blind spots where detectors are hard to install: self-powered sensors mounted in close contact remove the blind spots.
  • Early detection of busbar overheating and early response before a fire occurs.

3. System configuration

  1. Self-powered fire detection sensor — The sensor detects heat, generates its own power and sends an RF signal
  2. Signal Monitor (receiver) — Shows a unique number for each signal; linked to the PC via RS485
  3. PC monitoring — Fire detection monitoring and alarms for each sensor
